BC Legion Team has success in Sherbrooke!

From August 5th-7th, the best Youth Canadian Track and Field athletes gathered in Sherbrooke, Quebec to compete at the 2022 National Youth Legion Track and Field Championships.
As part of the BC Team program, we were excited to name 40 athletes and 8 Team Staff to the BC Legion Team. This team excelled in their events, taking home 43 TOTAL medals; 20 GOLD medals, 16 SILVER medals, 7 BRONZE medals, 62 TOP 10 performances, 17 PERSONAL BEST performances, and 4 Championship Record. In the U18 Heptathlon, Madison Gordon (Langley Mustangs) set a new personal best and was crowned National Champion with a score of 4398 points. Aidan Turner (Kajaks Track and Field Club) took the silver medal after 10 events with a score of 6213 points, while setting two new Championship records in the Decathlon Pole Vault, 100m, Long Jump, and Discus.
In the middle-distance events, Langley Mustangs athlete, Noah Louwerse dominated the U16 Men’s 800m and 1200m, winning a gold medal in both events. Bernardo Sada (Ocean Athletics) and Samuel May (Valley Royals Track & Field Club) went 1st and 2nd in the U16 1500m Steeplechase. Kamloops Track and Field Club athlete, Raiya Matonovich ran a personal best performance in the U16 women’s 800m with a time of 2:13.24.
Yemane Mulugeta (Ocean Athletics) ran to gold in the U18 men’s 2000m SC and silver in the men’s 3000m. Hudson Irvine (Coastal Track Club) won the U18 men's 800m. Leading the U18 women in the middle-distance events was Maella Hodgson (Ocean Athletics Track & Field Club) who set a Championship Record in the U18 Women’s 1500m and a 2nd place performance in the women’s 3000m. Maya Baechler ran to a bronze medal in the U18 women’s 800m. In the U18 women’s 2000m SC, Mackenzie Hack set a new personal best of 7:00.03, which landed her in the silver medal position.
Race walkers, Lowell Solmes (Unattached BC) and Grace Wong (Unattached BC), took home gold medals in the 3000m Race Walk event.
In the sprints, U16 Ryan Lofstrom (Comox Valley) took silver and bronze medals home in the 100m, 200m, and 300m. Calib Gruninger (Coquitlam Cheetahs) and Pishon Haughton (Okanagan Athletic Club), took home bronze medals in the 100m and 200m respectively. Makenna Self (Coquitlam Cheetahs) ran to a silver medal in the U16 100m.
The youth hurdlers did not disappoint with U18 Amelia Kristen’s (Vancouver Thunderbirds) gold medal in the 100m hurdles, along with Michael Scherk who ran to a silver medal in the 110m hurdles with a personal best time of 14.23. On the U16 side, Delaney Self (Coquitlam Cheetahs) ran an 80m hurdles personal best and silver medal! Delaney also ran to a silver medal in the 200m Hurdles. Hayden Hall set a new personal best in the 400m hurdles to win a silver medal in a time of 56.36.
In the field, Levi Tuura (Kajak’s Track & Field Club), took home gold in the U18 men’s High Jump with a jump of 2.01m. Mackenzie Hurtubise (Langley Mustangs) also took home gold in the U16 Pole Vault with a jump of 3.20m. In the U18 Pole Vault, Nathalie Flood took home the silver medal with a jump of 2.90m. Divine Aniamaka (Vancouver Thunderbirds) took home gold in the U18 Triple Jump with a personal best jump of 14.79m, and Clarence Cheung (Unattached BC) jumped to a first place finish with a personal best jump of 6.84m!
BC throwers dominated in the hammer circle with 4 medals! On the U18 women’s side, Lauren Curtis (Golden Ears Athletics) won with throw of 53.36m. Kian Zabihi (Kamloops Track & Field Club came second in the U18 men’s hammer competition with a throw of 58.52m. U16 hammer thrower, Lawrence Man (Kajaks Track & Field Club) threw a gold medal performance with a throw of 56.61m, and Gurleen Mander (Unattached BC) was the silver medallist with a throw of 43.74m.
