Team Ontario takes home Espoir Championship

While Team Canada looks to capture gold in Rio, Team Ontario took home the Canadian Eastern Espoir Championships this past weekend with an impressive 24 gold, 13 silver , 13 bronze and a points total of 295.

TeamO left for the east coast at the early hours of Thursday and returned home today.

It was a tough two days of competition but Ontario proved to be ready setting some new Espoir meet records. Rachael Wolfs of the University of Windsor Athletics Club set a meet record with a vault of 3.90m. Teammate and fellow pole vaulter Makiah Hunt put together an impressive performance with a vault of 3.70m, good enough for a second-place finish.

Team Ontario continued to show their strength in the field with Bailey Dell of the University of Windsor Athletics Club throwing an impressive 46.77m in the Women’s javelin throw. Beating the only record by 0.17m.

On the men’s side, Hans LaFleur of C.A.N.I Athletics went on the set a new Espoir record in the Men’s High jump with a height of 2.11m, taking home a gold medal.

TeamO was not done setting records yet, Pierce Lapage broke a 12-year-old record when he vaulted 4.90m.

Mark Emode with Speed River Track and Field Club encompassed the mental toughness and physical demands the Decathlon demands all the while setting two Espoir meet records. The first record being the 100m dash with an impressive time of 11.80, gaining points ahead of his competitors, Emode would finish the Decathlon on top all the while setting yet another meet record with a points total of 5578.

Sara Villani of London Western Track and Field Club took home first place in the women’s Heptathlon with a total of 4737 points.

Congratulations to all athletes on an incredible weekend and a massive kudos on taking home the Championship title.


Espoir was not the only meet that saw Ontario athletes set new records. Two athletes competing at Legion Nationals were ready to put their names in the history books. Cameron Ormond of the Newmarket Huskies broke the U16 1200m record with a staggering time of 3:28.99.

Javelin thrower Ryan Jacklin of Saugeen Track & Field Club would go on and set a new record with an impressive throw of 52.18m.
